Member holdingsPYCC is a research collection associated to the Centre for Microbial Resources (CREM) and housed in the Department of Life Sciences of FCT/UNL. PYCC was founded in 1952 by prof. Nicolau van Uden, who headed the collection until 1991, and was housed successively at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science (IGC) in Oeiras. PYCC was transferred to FCT/UNL in 1996 and was headed by prof. Isabel Spencer-Martins until 2008. It currently holds approximately 2600 strains, representing ca. 600 species and 120 genera of ascomycetous or basidiomycetous yeasts. PYCC has a long tradition of association with research on yeast systematics and ecology. More than 850 yeast strains were isolated either by researchers of the housing institutions (IGC, FCT/UNL) or by researchers from other laboratories and academic institutions in Portugal.
Services offeredSupply of certified yeast cultures to users in academia, research and industrial laboratories. Preservation of yeast cultures deposited by researchers or industrialists. Publicly accessible website that provides on-line search of the information on the yeast cultures preserved in PYCC. Molecular identification of yeasts. Consulting on issues pertaining to yeast systematics. Collaboration in tutorial training in the areas of yeast identification, classification, evolution and ecology.
ResearchYeast systematics, molecular phylogeny and ecology. Species boundaries, population structure and reproduction mode of basidiomycetous yeasts. Screening and characterization of selected yeast cultures, directed towards the search for new useful compounds and biological activities (in cooperation with third parties, e.g. biotech companies). Comparative genomics.
