Group(s) of biological resources stored in the collection: bacteria, archaea, cyanobacteria, eukaryotic algae, protozoa
The Norwegian Culture Collection of Algae, NORCCA, maintained and owned by the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) and the University of Oslo (UiO), includes algal strains from the two institutes and the former Danish algal culture collection SCCAP. Our collection currently holds about 2000 strains of algae, including over 800 strains of cyanobacteria. Other groups include Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Dinophyceae, Conjugatophyceae and Cryptophyceae. Most strains are isolated from lakes, often toxic water blooms, but other habitats include rivers, coastal waters and soil from Norway and international localities, even Svalbard and Antarctica. Most strains are kept in liquid media with controlled temperature and light conditions. Available strains are listed on our website.
